The VI-3 series of automatic audio/video switches allows two different
S-VHS video devices (i.e., a laser disc player and a VCR) to be connected
to a single monitor. The VI-3 detects which source is delivering a signal
and routes the signal to the monitor. This eliminates the need to run one
video device through another, thus preventing any signal loss. The VI-3
detects the video signals of the B input device to determine when to switch.
The VI is designed so that if both signals are present, the VI-3 will give
priority to the device on the Video B connection. The VI-3 can be used
to allow a laser disc player and a VCR to both have direct connection to
the monitor. This eliminates operating confusion as well as line noise
through excess wiring. Since the VI-3 can be used to switch audio, it is
particularly suited for use in home surround sound systems where the hi-fi
system and surround processor share the same power amplifier. The VI-3
offers automatic switching of the input signal to the power amplifier.
The VI-3 is designed to switch Y/C (S-VHS) video signals and stereo
audio, while the VI-2 is designed to switch composite video and stereo
audio.

What about car installations?
The VI is designed to be operated on 12 volts DC. This allows installations
in automobile and marine applications running the VI-3 off the battery.
Simply remove the wall adapter supplied and connect into the DC battery
power.
